Holiday Happenings in Greenville 2016

National holiday on a Thursday?  When Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national holiday to be observed throughout the land he could guess at, but surely not foresee, its endurance or impact on our culture. He chose Thursday because it did not conflict with the sabbath days of the major religions.  During the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to the fourth Thursday to give retailers more time to sell goods before Christmas, and there Thanksgiving has stayed. family

As I sat, gathered with new friends around a long table, many miles from my original home I saw many classic dishes, familiar since childhood, that no Thanksgiving would feel authentic without.  I mused on how iconic this shared experience had become.  Across the many cultures and cuisines that comprise the tapestry of our nation, on this Thursday one could sit at any feast table in America and find a dish they recognized.  There are many adaptations and ethnic variations on the standard menu but it is all about Comfort Food, belonging, coming home, participation and connection.  The memories, anticipation, and fulfillment of Thanksgiving are celebrated in the American soul.

For those who travel frequently, major holidays sometimes find them far from loved ones.  One can’t help but contemplate the meaning of Thanksgiving themes: home, family, belonging, and of course, favorite foods!  Seasoned travelers will tell you that the best way to really enjoy any adventure is to get to know the locals, that “family” can be found or made most anywhere.

Greenville really knows how to do holidays, so come hang out with us!  Trade stories.  Break bread.  Share in celebrations!  Here at the Swamp Rabbit Inn we take pride in making our guests feel cozy, comfy, welcome, and ‘at home’. Tripping Out on Greenville - Day Trip Destinations North

So this is not your first time in Greenville?  Maybe you’re here for an extended stay?  You’ve strolled downtown, done Falls Park, ridden the Swamp Rabbit Trail several times and you’re wondering:  so what else is there?  LOTS my friend, LOTS!  You need a fun day trip!  And this post is for you!  Actually the next 3 posts are for you too because I’m going to give you some ideas for what to do and see within 2.5 hours of Downtown Greenville to the north, south, east, and west.

NORTHWARD!

Traveler's Rest

Traveler’s Rest

Let’s start with the nearest attraction first until we venture across the border into North Carolina.  An hour or less by bike up the Swamp Rabbit Trail from the Inn and you will come to Traveler’s Rest.  I would say it’s a 'postcard perfect little village' to spend half a day poking around the great shops and sampling the inventive restaurants, but pretty much every place on this list will fit that description!  If you’re driving it’s also a great place to start your day trip to all points north with a breakfast at restaurants like Tandem Creperie or Upcountry Provisions and if you near to gear up, duck in to Sunrift Adventures.

Raven Cliff

Downtown-Saluda

Saluda

Just a little farther up highway 25 you will come to a favorite stop for long bike rides into the foothills - Hotel Domestique with it’s convenient coffee bar and renowned european bistro “17”.  If you take the back roads past the North Saluda Reservoir the way the cyclists do on what we all call “The Bakery Ride”  you will come to the charming village of Saluda.  Saluda is know for its idyllic little Main Street and the Coon Dog Day Festival for dogs and the people who love them, which just celebrated its 53 year.

Hotel Domestique

TableRockPark

Table Rock

If you bear left up the 276 out of Travelers Rest instead of to the right up 25, you will soon come to Pumpkintown (yes, it’s really called that!) and from there you can make your way to Table Rock.  All manner of hiking, fishing, kayaking and waterfall gazing await you for a lovely day outdoors in Table Rock State Park.

Downtown-Brevard

Brevard

Continuing north on 276, crossing into North Carolina, you can enjoy more hiking and waterfalls in Dupont Forest or Pisgah National Forest  and the adorable mountain town of Brevard.  A popular place in which to retire, Brevard is also a great hub for cyclists who want to train in the mountains. It’s also known for having a bit of thing for white squirrels and throws a festival in their honor every May.

Hendersonville

Back up the 25 and on to the 26, also in North Carolina, you will come next to Hendersonville.  Between Saluda and Hendersonville you will see signs for the Carl Sandburg Home historical site.  Hendersonville is home to girls camp Ton-a-Wandah, The Mother Earth News, and the North Carolina Apple Festival every September.  They also have a thing for bears

LakeLure

Lake Lure

If you hang a right at Hendersonville, down HWY 64, you’ll shortly come to Chimney Rock State Park  and beautiful Lake Lure, passing by the community of Bat Cave.  There is a bat cave with bats, but you can’t go in; it’s protected.  You’ll have much more fun at the lake anyway!

chimneyrock

Asheville

Asheville

Less than half an hour up 26 and you come to the big town to the north, hip and happenin’ Asheville.  Considered a bohemian, artist’s enclave and “hippie capital of the South” ('dreadnecks'), Asheville has long ranked on enumerable “best of” lists and boasts, among other things, a thriving fresh music scene.  You will find plenty to do and see from restaurants to galleries to concerts all surrounded by historic architecture and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Biltmore

Biltmore Village

If you want to check out something really trippy head for the nearby Biltmore Estate.  The internationally renowned Chateauesque mansion was built by George Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895.  There is a Biltmore Village, winery, and Biltmore Forest.  A variety of tours, carriage rides and such could easily occupy a luxurious day.

Have I given you any ideas?  "Coon Dogs, White Squirrels, and Bears, oh my!  Coon Dogs, White Squirrels, and Bears, oh my!..."  Keep that Instagram at the ready and hashtag away.  Have a grand day trip out and then trip on back Inn!

Ka - BOOM!!!  Having a Blast on the Fourth of July in Greenville SC!!!

You may easily understand why swamp rabbits have a love/hate relationship with fireworks -  big eyes / even bigger ears!  BUT we are far-sighted and partial to blue and green so if you’re looking for us while attending the fireworks display on the Liberty Bridge this July 4th in Falls Park we’ll be at the back, like waaay back, across River Drive near Linky Stone Park!  Also, consumers can purchase fireworks in South Carolina so we rabbits will probably be watching from in the river.

To help you celebrate the Fourth of July in Greenville, scroll down the post and you’ll find a list of popular displays in the area and all the info on the Wells Fargo Red, White and Blue Festival.

Ancient-Chinese-fireworks

Speaking of “four”, the ancient Chinese are credited with giving the world four great inventions:  the Compass, Paper Making, Printing, and… Gunpowder.  The goal of any successful firework is to achieve one or several of four effects:  Noise, Light, Smoke, and/or Floating Materials (like confetti).

Tybee Island palm effect

The earliest record of fireworks as a royal entertainment dates back to the 7th century during the Tang Dynasty.  Fireworks were apparently available for the common people of China to purchase and enjoy during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279).  Over the next four centuries or so, fireworks (and gunpowder) spread across Asia and the rest of the world capturing, among others, the fancy of Peter the Great and the Russian court.  In the 18th century a French priest living in Beijing wrote a detailed account of the manufacture and use of fireworks for the Paris Academy of Sciences. In 1749 Music for the Royal Fireworks was composed by George Frideric Handel to celebrate the Peace treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle and the whole world went Boom!!!

Preparing_Firework

Fireworks competitions are held around the world where companies compete with enormous displays.  One of the largest is the World Pyro Olympics held in Manila, Philippines.

Besides sparklers and those snake-y things, fireworks are either of the self propelled "sky rocket" variety or the "mortar shell"  which are shot from a launcher.  In the fireworks industry the effects that most of us are familiar with go by the names of flowers like Peony, Chrysanthemum, Dahlia, Willow, and Palm, so look for those and see if you can recognize which is which when you look up in the sky this weekend.  More involved types include multi break shells, or "Bouquet" style, "Fish", the ones that swirl around like fireflies , and contraptions like the "Catherine Wheel".

cherry flower Hamburg

Those beautiful colors in fireworks are generated by “pyrotechnic stars” usually just called stars - which produce intense light when ignited. Stars contain five basic types of ingredients: a fuel, an oxidizer, color producing chemicals, a binder, and a chlorine donor which strengthens the color.

What chemicals make what colors, you ask?  Wikipedia has provided a chart:

Pecans and Pyros

Now how about getting your hands on some firecrackers to play pyro wizard on your own terms?  Guess what!  In South Carolina the average bear (or human, really, please don’t let the bears buy firecrackers - they use them to fish) can buy firecrackers at any one of MANY convenient roadside establishments.  If you come from a no-firecrackers-for-amateurs state this may fill your school-kid heart with glee!

fruit and fireworks

"The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as well as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have general jurisdiction over what types of fireworks may be legally sold in the United States. The federal law is only the minimum standard however, and each state is free to enact laws that are more stringent if they so choose." (wikipedia)  Most common consumer fireworks are classified thusly: Class 1.4G (Minor Explosion Hazard Confined To Package:Pyrotechnics) UN0336 Fireworks (Consumer or Common Fireworks).

Cup o' gunpowder in a tin can

States such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Delaware ban all consumer fireworks completely.  States like South Dakota, South Carolina (that’s us!) and Tennessee allow most or all legal consumer fireworks to be sold and used throughout the year.

No Smoking - no Sh*t?!

We at the Swamp Rabbit Inn enjoy the Wells Fargo Red, White and Blue Festival fireworks from the comfort of our upper and lower back decks at the Inn!  We have a great view of the fireworks from our parking lot and feel free to bring a chair and BYOB it in our or you can stroll down to the park and scooch up closer to the bridge if you like.

You Look SO HOT! Let's Get Wet! In the Swim in Greenville

When summer hits The South, it's hot.  We can't deny the humidity is high.  The Sun here does not play... but Southerners do!  We hit the water. We are simply surrounded with fresh water options, both natural and manmade, so it's easy to find a place to swim in Greenville.

Ahhhhh

As we mentioned in a previous post, most visitors travel to Greenville to get outside so let's start with outdoor water, then we'll get to indoor and indoor/outdoor and even where to get your little ones proficient in the water so they can safely swim in Greenville and wherever else they please!

Jump!

Jump in!  To a Swimming hole!  Yeah we've got those!  Long Shoals Wayside Park is off the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway. It's a little east of Lake Keowee, part of Poe Creek State Forest, which overlooks Little Eastatoee Creek. There are flat, gently sloping shoals to slide down into the creek waters.  This area is also of interest if you like to fish for trout!  Trails lead off the parking lot and there are picnic tables nearby to gather around.

Twin Falls/ Reedy Creek Cove

Reedy Cove Creek, just north of Table Rock State Park also has a cool deep swimming hole and other more shallow swimming areas.  This area is also known for its Twin Falls Trail, so it makes for a lovely day out.

Keowee

Our lakes are postcard perfect (and social media perfect)!  From canoes and paddle boards to motorboats and fishing we've got acres of water for your favorite water sports.  Nearest and dearest to the city center, Paris Mountain State Park, was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression in the 1930s. The renovated bathhouse, now called the Park Center, presides over the lakes and swimming areas used by Camp Buckhorn.  Paddleboats, canoes and kayaks are available for rent here, so there is something for everyone.

paris water

Table Rock State Park is another nearby gem for fun and frolic in the water. It features two lakes, camping, cabins and is the trailhead for the 80-mile long Foothills Trail.

table rock

Lake Keowee, Lake Joccasee  and Lake Hartwell all offer the full compliment of water recreation options to keep everyone cool in their favorite fashion, so do investigate these links to plan a happy day.

Hartwell

Bathing in a predictable pool more your style?  Right this way!  Oh, wait, your kids want to know where to play right now!... let's shortcut a moment and send them HERE.  Water parks aplenty await.  For a baseball theme, 7th Inning Splash will amuse from splash pads, to pools, to slides.

7th inning

Discovery Island, also operated by Greenville County Rec, with its lazy river, playground, water slides and flow rider wave simulator will not disappoint.  Otter Creek is known for being delightfully accessible and popular with the littler kiddos.

lazy river

Ready for a "real" pool?  Maybe some lessons available?  Our YMCA facilities are the first stop.  Caine Halter Y and Greenville Health System Family Y have outdoor pools.  Caine, GHS, and Eastside Y have indoor pools as well.  Find all the lessons they offer HERE.

Caine Halter Y

The Westside Aquatic Complex (Oooh , shiny!)  operated by Greenville County Rec. also has athletic fields in the surrounding Westside Park for the water-averse in your tribe.  But, considering it boasts a tournament facility, folks tend to come here for some serious swimming. Check out the link for all, all, ALL they have to offer.

Kroc Center, or The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (whew!)  makes you feel more fit and, frankly, a little taller, more attractive, etc. just walking into the place.  It's a total athletic recreation complex with various fields and gyms adjacent.  With classes for "Krocadilos, Krockies and Krocodiles" they have everyone covered, including Sail Prep classes for those bound for open water.  Lap pool, Zero entry, whirlpool spa and a groovy indoor/outdoor slide make this place an oasis year-round.

Kroc lessons

Taking a last side trip outside to wrap up our aquatic adventure... The natural funzone, Sliding Rock pictured below, is just over the border in Asheville NC, a short hop from the Swamp Rabbit Inn.  It's a favorite of the Innkeeper and regional landmark so we couldn't leave it out.

slippery when wet

Craving a dip?  Feeling cool and damp yet?  Can I offer you a towel?  I hope this post has inspired you to pack your swim trunks in your travel trunk, or heck, go skinny dippin', we won't tell!  No need to melt under the Southern sun  - at least not on dry land.  Getting wet is easy if you wish to swim in Greenville so dive inn!  If you forgot your sunscreen Miss Lisa has some in the Bike Shed.

On June 14, 2014 The Swamp Rabbit Inn opened its shiny, refurbished doors to its first guests.  Over the past two years the Inn has welcomed hundreds of visitors to enjoy Greenville.  This Tuesday, June 14, 2016, we will be celebrating the 2 year anniversary at  Truck Inn Tuesday and hope you can join us!

It seems like forever ago since I heard the hammers at 1 Logan Street begin to transform the sleepy office building into the beloved West End hub of activity that it now is.

swamp-rabbit-inn

There was a lot to be done to outfit the six guest rooms in IKEA style, with embellishments and amenities!

When the place was as polished as can be the word went out and the guests came to see!  The greatest joy over the last two years has been hosting the interesting people who have stayed here and shared a little of their lives with us.  It's been a blast, really, and NEVER a dull moment.

One of the first groups to give us a try were Velo Girl Rides on their Cycle to Farm Tour.

In December of that first year we were thrilled to receive a 2014 GGAR Revitalization Award for the Swamp Rabbit Inn in downtown Greenville, SC.

Trip advisor made us a top rated B&B.  And we got listed for wedding accommodations on The Knot.

A lot of articles were written.  A lot.

Travel writers like Travels with Darley  and Bikabout came, and rode, and wrote, and made videos.

Meanwhile, Innkeeper Wendy Lynam, was a busy bee opening other properties to welcome all manner of travelers to Greenville...

A Life of Slice(s), the Pie's the Limit! Pizza in Greenville

Perhaps you have gotten the impression that Greenvillians are a tad food obsessed.  Guilty as charged! Book my therapy session right away (and please provide snacks)!  With over 100 restaurants (and counting) downtown and 600 county wide, it's a fact.  Entrepreneurial passions tend toward edible enterprises here and the trend shows no sign of slowing.  Fresh, original, organic, artisan crafted, locally sourced... we're almost too tasty for our own good.  In this post I will illustrate the virtues of the local pizza scene because it is going off (or is that on wood fire?) in Greenville!

wood burning pizza oven

Speaking of passions, pizza is a word that inspires many, as well as opinions.  Everyone has their own ideas about what constitutes the perfect and "authentic" pie.  The first US pizzeria opened in New York in 1905 and it's been a free-for-all ever since.  Three main schools of thought have emerged: the classic New York thin crust style, Sicilian thick crust, and the Chicago or Greek deep dish style.  All claim "original" status.  Then there are the artisanal varieties, a mash up of crusts, methods, and toppings all seeking to attain core pizza consciousness.  Do keep toiling away, because we love every one of you to the very last bite!

Bronx Bomber

Let's start by giving props to some local staples before we greet the newbies on this saucy scene.  All the shops in this post have accrued many local accolades, ranked on many "best of" lists and have gained hordes of faithful patrons.

Vic's Pizza at 12 E. Coffee is straight outta Brooklyn and provides Greenville with New York soul starting at $3 a slice.  Their charitable giving enriches the community in the classic Italian style.  La famiglia!  They even have a White Pizza named for Mayor Knox White!  The menu also includes calzones, stromboli, subs, gyros, wings, canolis and "highly addictive" garlic knots.  Sigh!

Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom is (now) a chain with deep Southern roots that can be credited with getting the artisanal pizza dough ball rolling with alternative toppings, as only hippie dippy kids could in Atlanta back in 1974. Downtown Greenville has an outpost of their tie dyed goodness at 1 Augusta Street.  Click the link for the menu and particulars that many in these parts have committed to memory.

looks delicious

Barley's Tap Room has been in operation for 20 years, starting in Spindale NC in 1996.  We have been graced with a location in the heart of downtown at 25 W. Washington.  Come for the 72 craft beers on tap, stay for the bar games (pool, darts, foosball) and PIZZA!  This is one of the establishments on the boulevard that keeps Greenville nightlife hopping, so if you want a place to hang out with friends Barley's is a good spot.

sidewall pizza

When Sidewall Pizza opened just off the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Travelers Rest all creatures in the region big and small rejoiced.  Everyone has a gift, some stumble upon it later in life, but once they find their niche it can be magical.  Andy O'Mara is known for handsome canoe building but fell overboard and into his true calling with pizza.  Sidewall Pizza has just opened a new location in Downtown Greenville at 99 Cleveland Street.  Hooray!!!  In addition to the  handcrafted, brick oven pizzas made with premium local and Italian ingredients, extraordinary locavore salads, ice cream and old fashioned sodas, the new location will feature sandwiches.  Sidewall has also demonstrated a commitment to hosting unique fundraisers for local causes and already, in such a short time, holds a place in our hearts.

Coastal Crust

Save the date!  Bike to Lunch with the Swamp Rabbit Inn and Coastal Crust Greenville during Euphoria Greenville 2016!  Where would the South be without its rogues and rebels?  Enter Coastal Crust Pizza.  It's a brick pizza oven on a truck and they are rolling up to Greenville this summer for Euphoria and planning to park around town awhile.  Lucky us!

CC-boone0268

Their catering food truck is a newly restored 1956 Ford F600 that features a wood-fired Valoriana pizza oven that fires up gorgeous Neapolitan-style pizza.   They've been a hit in Charleston catering for special events, corporate events and weddings.  Along with the hot pizza, the truck also has a custom tap system that has drinks from local breweries. Coastal Crust Greenville will rely on fresh produce from local farmers.

Fresh greens on a pizza!!!

Make sure you join us for Bike to Lunch on the Swamp Rabbit Trail Friday, Sept. 23 from Swamp Rabbit Inn & Properties to Trailblazer Park with Craig Rogers of Border Springs Farm, and enjoy lunch with Coastal Crust local TR eateries, and Williamsburg Winery.  Tickets for Euphoria can be found HERE.  Special Swamp Rabbit Inn Package HERE.

pizza on the corner

Urbanites in Greenville have been anticipating the opening of two major developments bracketing Downtown to the north and east.  Near neighbor of Sidewall Pizza, the South Ridge complex at Church Street and University Ridge, with 350 luxury apartment units, will not go hungry!  Joining much anticipated Biscuit Head will be The Toss Pizza Pub.  Owned and operated by Greenville's Jacob Billingsley, who also owns Blueberry Frog and Gringo's Cantina, Toss will offer artisan wood-fired pizza and a full-service bar.  Who wants to bet this will be a chic boîte to grab a bite during a night on the town?

stone pizza

As Main and Stone apartments are set to dominate the historic district of North Main, Stone Pizza is set to open at the corner of Stone Avenue and Park Avenue in July of this year.  Moving into the space of the former Park Avenue Pub,  the sports-oriented, casual concept will provide patio dining on wood-fired and craft brewed fare, and a bar service until 1 am.  It's sure to be an instant hit to liven the neighborhood in a cozy way for locals and newcomers alike.

SRC Pizza

Anchoring the new pizza news with a vivacious venture from the fun bunch at Swamp Rabbit Café,  they are making a shipping container into a brick oven pizza joint.  Oh, yes, they are!  Swamp Rabbit Pizza.  And you can be a "piece of the pie" by donating HERE.  Roll tape:

Now, we would be remiss if we did not include a couple of notable outliers who are yet integral pizza providers in the lives of many Greenvillians and deserve mention and praise.

Cheeseburger pizza

Locally owned Frodo's Pizza at 511 S. Pleasantburg has been in operation for 32 years, and is a storied local favorite.  Choose homemade crust in thick or thin with fresh ingredients for a tasty experience dining in, or take one home to the Shire and make all your hobbits happy.

nacho

The unassuming City View House of Pizza is a surprise and locals swear by it.  At 702 Cedar Lane Rd it's a bit west past the Swamp Rabbit Café.  They offer a solid menu of pizzas, home made pastas, salads, subs and more in a family friendly atmosphere.

Honestly, when you are in Greenville you are bounded by pizza on all sides!  You could fill several weeks with investigative adventures on pizza alone.  And then you could ride your bike.  A lot.  Or, ride your bike to the pizza!  Either way, get yourself here and we promise to show you a delicious time.  Buono appetito! Ciao!

Oh Beans! Coffee Crawl, Caffeine Fix... Getting Your Joe on in G'ville

Methodical floor

Are we feeling a little foggy?  We can "fix" that. Right this way...  This is a celebration of coffee, coffee roasters and coffee houses that can be found in what we will call for this post 'Greater Greenville',  what the locals consider within the near orbit of 'Greenville proper'.  Rest assured you are never far from a boost of brown when you are in our zone.  Fair warning:  after this excursion you may end up with a serious buzz, an insider's swagger, updated sense of hipster style, bags of goodies and gifts, extra piercings, ink, dreads, dye and possibly a man bun to help you vibrate all the way home.

Due South

Let's start, ironically, with the far northern outpost which is actually called Due South!

Red Roaster

Due South is an industrial, hip café and roastery, roasting on the premises, that can be found in the new art enclave of Taylors Mill at 250 Mill Street in Taylors.

coffee

They are open later than most (heaven bless them) Mon - Thurs: 9 am - 9 pm, Fri - Sat: 9 am - 10 pm, and Sun: Noon - 7 pm.  They often host special foodie events and have live music so check their Facebook page for updates.

Leopard Forest

A Leopard prowls the town of Travelers Rest just north of Greenville and her den is at 27 South Main Street, The Forest Coffeehouse.

Leopard Forest Coffee Company roasts daily in Marietta, SC, just aways up the highway from Travelers Rest and the coffee can be enjoyed, among many other places, at The Forest.  The café is spacious and calm, usually filled with students reading.  It's proximity to the Swamp Rabbit Trail has its counter bustling with cyclists throughout the day.  Outdoor seating to watch the world go by.  Mon - Sat    7 am - 6 pm, Sun   10 am - 5 pm.

The Swamp Rabbit Café and grocery is now darn near a legend here after only a handful of years on the scene.  It can be found at 205 Cedar Lane but is also accessible directly from the Trail itself.

SRC

They offer a menu of local eats and treats, organic and locally sourced produce, groceries and baked goods,  AND they host many special events, AND offer cooking classes!  Open Mon -Fri 7:30 am - 7 pm, Sat 8 am - 6 pm, Sun 9 am - 6 pm.  If you are in town for more than 24 hours it will be hard NOT to wind up here.

heaven

Heading southward down to the heart of Greenville we come first to Methodical Coffee.

Methodical

Opened only in the last year, their almost zen approach to coffee has caught on and Methodical is growing exponentially, adding a roastery that will be in operation a stone's throw from the cafe any day now.

beans becoming soon

Located in One City Plaza at 101 N. Main, many a business meeting is held here over yummy baked goods, and you may also rent their elegant space and patio for private gatherings.

Enjoy the sophisticated ambiance at Methodical,  Mon - Fri  7 am - 6 pm, Sat  8 am - 6 pm, and Sun 8 am - 5 pm.

There's something brewing down below!  Almost across the street from Methodical and down some steps is a place that Greenville's movers, shakers, artists and others have made into an institution.  Coffee Underground, literally in a basement space at 1 East Coffee Street (not even kidding - how cool is that??)  starts to crank early, so get in the queue and prepare to move fast.

Open and roasting for over 20 years, they also offer full breakfast, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, smoothies, milkshakes, fraps, beer, wine & cocktails.  As if that weren't enough they have a theater space adjacent to the cafe area where many a cool happening can be enjoyed.

Put your ear to the 'Ground Mon - Thurs 7 am - 10 pm, Friday 7 am - 12 am, Saturday 8 am - 12 am, Sunday 8 am - 10 pm.

Turning a little bit south down Main to 11 S. Main we come to Port City Java.  A bit of a chain with 32 locations but roasting in Wilmington NC and right on the Main drag.

Of note is the back patio which can be a lovely respite from a busy day in Downtown Greenville.  Mon - Thurs 6:30am - 7:00pm, Fri 6:30am - 11:00pm, Sat 7:00am - 11:00pm, Sun 7:00am - 7:00pm.

At the top of Falls Park before you get to the bridge, grab a cup and a gourmet, custom blended cone at the Spill the Beans!  This place smells scrumptious!  Lots of space indoor and outdoor, and waterfall views.  Sweet!  531 South Main Street, Mon–Sat 6:30 am – 11:00pm, Sun 1:30pm – 9:00pm.

Down, down, farther south we go to the new kid on the block and closest to the Swamp Rabbit Inn - Bex Cafe and Juice Bar!

A cozier corner cafe you could not find and we're partial, as we can roll uphill and right into it with minimal effort.  Great organic coffee, delicious healthy eats, like breakfast sandwiches and creative smoothies, it makes our little neighborhood complete!

In case you're not sure where you are, West End Coffee Roasters has a West End Coffee Shoppe at 1o21 South Main.  On the way in between Zanti Yoga and Fluor Field ballpark... you get the picture.

west-end-coffee

The coffee is roasted just a bit farther south of town with an array of  single origin, fair trade, blends and flavors like Toasted Carolina Pecan for retail or wholesale purchase.  You could say they are pouring far and wide!

If the coffee cafes of Greenville had a lantern rouge, The Village Grind would be it, our last stop on the crawl.  Are your teeth clattering yet?  Have we used the term cute? cozy? hip? stylish?  The Village Grind is all of these, also relatively new and kinda tucked away too.

last call

At 1263 Pendleton Street, near the offices of Town Magazine, the shop has been through several hours extensions as more folks begin to find their way to Greenville's growing arts district.  So far, and hopefully subject to even further extension... Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Sat 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Sun 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.  The Village Grind is one of those places that makes you feel cool just settling into the décor.  Of course the coffee, supplied by Due South, and munchies from the Swamp Rabbit Cafés baker are indeed a collection of some of the best Greenville has to offer its visitors and so a perfect spot to end our romp.

I hope this little post offers some help on where to get your jump start, your motor running, your cockles warmed and your hippity hopping while in Greenville.  Just a few of our many "perks".  See you soon! We'll have coffee.

Bike Month in Greenville Just Keeps on Pumpin'!

Keep your helmets fastened, kiddos, 'cause the pace is not letting up!

This Saturday continues the spirit of Bike Month with the Blessing of the Bikes in front of  M. Judson Books on Main.  And then Stephanie Morgan held story time on the front the steps with that book "Hey Blue!" about my cousin's kid, Blue, the bike riding bunny rabbit (wonder where he gets it from?!?).

M. Judson

Later that day the expo for the Mountains to Main Street Triathlon and Half Marathon was held almost next door at  the Marriot Courtyard   where The Swamp Rabbit Inn manned a booth.

On Sunday morning bright and early the race began with the swim in the ultra-pure waters of Lake Keowee in Seneca, SC, and your faithful Swamp Rabbit hopped along for all the action...

Then the bike ride commenced along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  After the ride the participants ran along the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, around Furman Lake, then toward the city with a finish line overlooking the Reedy River and Reedy Falls in award-winning downtown Greenville, SC.

Congrats, Everybody!!!  You looked fabulous out there!

Now hang with us a little longer here, because May is not done and there are a few diversions left to take inn.  Need a little break from biking?  Well, I suppose you can always easily ride your bike to these events, too,  if you choose (we recommend it)!  The 22nd Annual Upstate Shakespeare Festival begins May 22nd (tonight!) and continues through July 31 in Falls Park.  Shows are FREE and start at 7 pm. See "As You Like It" in May and June, and "Julius Caesar" in July.

Shakespeare in Falls Park

Remember when we warned you:  The Scottish are coming!!!??  Well they are almost here. Gallabrae -Greenville Scottish Games will be hurling away May 27th - 28th.  The Great Scot parade marches down Main Street in downtown Greenville Friday the 27th at 6 pm and the games take place on the 28th, all day, at Furman campus. They call them "Heavy Athletics".  Uh huh!

Gallabrae

Did someone say "Where's the beer?" ?  It's Greenville, surely the beer is near!  If you can tear yourself away from the parade, tap into the wild at the Brew in the Zoo, also on the 27th, from 6:30 pm t0 9:00 pm. Adults 21 and older can sample an assortment of beers and enjoy food and live music while exploring the zoo after-hours.  All proceeds benefit various programs throughout the zoo.

Greenville Zoo

See?  Come to Greenville.  Work up a sweat.  Hydrate.  Watch some other folks work up a sweat.  Hand up a beverage.  Get some culture.  Have a beer!  Repeat!  That's a summer day in Greenville!

After seeing that racer I think I'll rock the rainbow "hare" one more time.  Cheers!

Arty, Foodie, Fairs and Festivals... it's Fun in Greenville

The weather is PERFECT for fun in Greenville these days and you know that when the sun is out and the weather is mild you can't keep us Greenvillians from playing in the middle of the street.   So fest we must!  As I rolled up the side street from the Reedy River on my bunny bicycle toward South Main to take on Artisphere, the strains of "Purple Rain" graced my rabbit ears.  A nice homage and colorful greeting to begin my tour!

Now in its 12th year, Artisphere is Greenville's signature fine art event.

It's become a May tradition for us to host award-winning visual artists and performing artists of national and international caliber, showcasing their work with an open-air Artist Row in the West End and at various venues along Main Street.

On the Main Street bridge there are lively demonstrations by glass blowers and metal workers, among others.

Street performers dance, pose and otherwise roam among the visitors.  In addition, there are performances by local youth groups and creative, educational activities for children.

Chalk artists are stirring up colorful dust on the sidewalks.

DSCN0850

Not to be outdone, (we did say foodie at the top) the TD Saturday Farmer's Market is back on Main every Saturday and it's as yummy as ever.

TDSaturdayMarket

On offer from 8:00 am to Noon it's a great way to kick off a day of downtown fun in Greenville.  And talk about color!

Currently featured crops in season are: Asparagus, strawberries, peaches, cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, peas, radishes and spinach!  My mouth is watering!!!

We know that the South has a well-earned reputation as being a little sticky sometimes as the weather heats up but trust me, that's not now.  All that's sticky now is the barbecue sauce!  I love barbecued vegetables!  But I digress.  It is ideal here, so come on out in the street with us, have some fun in Greenville and enjoy life Southern style!

MAY DAY!!! Get Inn on This!

We’ve got a big day planned and we hope you can come!

Trek Travel Ride

From pastoral to pasture to plate, three fun events are happening May 1st at the Inn:  Trek Travel 40 mile group ride, May Bike Month kickoff proclamation and our first “Dinner With Friends” event.

Councilwoman Amy Ryberg-Doyle

The ride, hosted by Trek Travel will depart the Inn at 10 am and meander through the rolling hills surrounding Greenville and Travelers Rest.  Here is the ride sheet and route!  Light refreshments will be provided before and after.  The Bike Month proclamation with the ever-gracious and cycling enthusiastic Councilwoman Amy Ryberg-Doyle will follow the return of the ride at approximately 1 pm.

Craig Rogers, Border Springs Farms

We are so excited for our first "Dinner With Friends" event at the Swamp Rabbit Inn that we can hardly contain ourselves!  From the beginning our focus has been about bringing people together and this event brings together some of our very good friends - friends who can cook!

Michael Kramer

Joining us next Sunday are Chef Michael Kramer of Table 301, Steven Musolf of Lazy Goat, Teryi Youngblood of Passerelle Bistro, Krystal Hill of Lazy Goat, Craig Rogers (the Cycling Shepard) of Border Springs Farms and Michael Kimball of Williamsburg Winery.  This event’s fare features spring lamb.  See the mouthwatering menu they’ve planned for us below!

Lazy Goat chefs

Foodies have always gravitated around the Swamp Rabbit Inn.  It somehow goes together - fitness, food, and friends.  We are all food and wine enthusiasts and want to bring intriguing, well crafted, intimate dining events to our community.  We’ve found that riding bikes and gathering around tables over great food are two of the very best ways to make new friends and great memories.

Teryi Youngblood

Greenville’s food scene has been growing by leaps and bounds in tandem with it’s cycling scene.  Just as this May day at the Inn combines the best of both we hope to continue to create collaborative, one of a kind events to celebrate local talent, exceptional experiences and build lasting connections.

Michael Kimball

Join us in the morning for a taste of the bike touring life with the Trek Travel group ride,  Bike Month kickoff with Councilwoman Doyle at the Inn afterward and then in the evening as we turn over our kitchen to the talented chefs for our very first "Dinner With Friends" event.  It proves to be wonderfully memorable from start to finish.

Details:  Six courses, six wines. The event is from 6:oopm - 9:00pm and the cost is $85 per person to attend.  This is a very small event so tickets are very limited. Click here to purchase your tickets today from the Swamp Rabbit Inn. Questions? Call the Swamp Rabbit Inn at (864) 517-4617.

Greenville: Inn the Business of Cycling, (this is how we roll...)

Perhaps you’ve heard that Greenville has a bit of a thing for cycling and that cyclists have a thing for Greenville.  What started out as a best kept secret has been whispered across the country until it became a roar.  We built a little trail that went from here to there and it seemed like an oasis in the heart of a city.  The community embraced it, businesses opened around it and on it, put out the welcome mat for cyclists, served healthy food, great coffee, craft beer, and began to thrive.  Soon everyone wanted inn on that cycling thing!

visit-greenville

Cycling creates vitality and revitalizes everything and everyone around it.  It supports healthy, mindful living and engagement with both nature and community. That’s good for building great cities and that’s good for business.  The Greenville metro area now supports a massive cycling community with many municipal and industry-supported initiatives.  So how about some numbers? Nuts and bolts? Brass tacks?  (No, squirrels, not those nuts!  Moving on.)

Swamp-Rabbit-Trail

Dupont

The Greenville Hospital System (GHS) Swamp Rabbit Trail now has over half-a-million users per year. Among those, more than 125,000 come from out of town, contributing $6.7 million in trail tourism.  Dozens of new businesses have opened that have a direct connection to the trail and Greenville’s vibrant cycling community.  Among multi-use, rail-to-trail systems, the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail has above-average use for commuting and short trips. Greenville County tourist spending is on the rise.  It saw an increase of $83 million in 2014.

In addition, companies such as the Trek Travel have chosen Greenville for recurring bicycle-touring trips, bringing tourists from all over the globe. Sample a Trek Travel ride on May 1, 2016 leaving from the Swamp Rabbit Inn!!  Click here for more details on the free ride guided by Trek Travel.

Trek-Travel-Ride

We’ve got class.  In addition to GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, the Greenville area features world-class road riding, with everything from beginner rides to pro-level challenges and training, mountain biking at Paris Mountain State Park, the Clemson Experimental Forest and the DuPont State Recreational Forest, dedicated cyclo-cross routes, and bicycle touring that rival the European mountains.  Check out "Cycling Greenville" a guidebook with 20 great rides around Greenville County written by inn keeper Wendy Lynam.

There is truly something for every type of cycle tourist in the Greenville area and the Upstate of South Carolina. The weather in the Upstate is temperate year round.  We have a few days that are too hot and a few that are too cold but very few days each year that aren’t great for riding.

We’ve got bragging rights!  According to the USA Today newspaper, the community cycling investment has put Greenville on the map for cyclists traveling in the Southeast. Bicycling Magazine lists Greenville in the top twenty cities in the country for bicycling.  And the League of American Cyclists recognizes more than three dozen Greenville businesses as “Bicycle Friendly” (BFBs).

Gotta love those MAMILs: middle-aged men in lycra (hey, if I didn’t have all this fur I’d be a middle-aged buck in lycra)! Cycle tourists have a median age of 53 years old and use expendable income for cycling related trips.  More than 50% of cycle tourists have household income above $75,000, with 10% earning over $200,000.

Tandem

A full 92% of cycle tourists are planning a multi-day cycle trip in the next three years.  In addition to cycle trips, cyclists engage in other activities such as: day road rides (87%), taking bikes on vacation (85%), independent bike touring (82%), casual riding in town (80%), and road racing (76%). Don’t expect the hubbub to blow over anytime soon.  Greenville has become a hub for international business, hosting companies from all over the world.  Currently, Greenville has the highest international investment per capita in the nation.

With a metro population of over 860,000, major industries including technology and financial services, and a gross product over $36 billion, Greenville and the Upstate of South Carolina has the right demographics to continue supporting and growing its cycle industry.  And generations of Swamp Rabbits quietly keeping everything warm and fuzzy.  You’re welcome.

School Spirits - Painting Greenville Purple and White, and Orange and Purple, and Blue and...

There are friendly rivalries raging in the Upstate!  Greenvillians are all about being true to their school(s).  It is hard to travel far with out spotting a Furman Paladin purple diamond or a Clemson orange Tiger paw and on game day (game week, game month…), street lamps, shop windows and private cars will be festooned in purple and white or purple and orange or both.  Convenient that the love of purple is shared by both camps!

For the Swamp Rabbit Inn and Properties, when it comes to families visiting for campus functions our focus is on the “Properties” part!  We have your fan base covered!  Our Furman Cottage and Swamp Rabbit Lodge are right next to the Furman campus and can accommodate even an extended family group comfortably.  If any of Clemson’s many satellite functions in downtown Greenville are your target, in addition to the Inn, the Swamp Rabbit Cottage and Townhouses can provide a cozy clubhouse.

“All hail the white and purple floating on high

Hear the shouts of triumph echo through the sky…”

Furman University is the picture postcard ideal of a cozy liberal arts college situated on 750 meticulously sculpted acres just north of the City of Greenville and nestled at the feet of Paris Mountain.  The private institution takes great pride in housing all of it’s 2700 students on campus for the full four years of undergraduate study.  They converge from 45 states and 53 countries.  This creates a tremendous sense of community which reverberates throughout Greenville’s cultural landscape.  A hub of intellectual, artistic and athletic life, there is literally ALWAYS something worth attending at Furman!  The Swan Lake and Asian Garden are sublime places to wander and reflect, both figuratively and literally.  The library and bookstore are substantial and elegant.  In addition to running and mountain biking trails around the campus, various areas are traditional meet up spots for groups like the Greenville Spinners cycling club and Greenville Track Club runners.

How about TEAMS?  Furman has 20 NCAA division 1 sports teams, 10 for men and 10 for women.  Women outnumber men on campus by the way - 57% vs. 43%.  Their primary rival is Charleston’s The Citadel. The Paladins are known for prowess in baseball, football, soccer, tennis, rugby and golf.  There are currently ELEVEN former Paladins on the LPGA tour.  The university has distinguished itself internationally for its beauty and nationally as South Carolina’s top liberal arts college.  Furman has set ambitious goals for physical and philosophical growth in the near term. Check out it’s Vision 2020 plans!

cheers

In addition to traditional sport, Furman’s long weekend of Homecoming and Reunion events include a carnival, floats, art exhibits, a golf tournament, tailgates, cheerleader clinic, and of course, pep rally and bonfire.  It’s a happy slice of American collegiate life!

Greenville Technical College is about getting down to business!  It has four separate campuses plus two other training facilities dotting the county, with it’s main hub, Barton Campus near downtown Greenville.  GTC’s two-year programs are dedicated to fast tracking students into technical careers to meet the needs of the Upstate’s burgeoning manufacturing sector.  Programs offering degrees and certificates include Arts and Sciences, Business, Technology, Health and Wellness, and Public Service.  Short term, job specific training courses are also available.

GTC is currently very excited about the development of the Center for Manufacturing Innovation, a collaboration with Clemson University to be located at the Millennium Campus next to Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).  As with the other programs at GTC this concept is strongly influenced by input from leaders of the corporations such as BMW, Michelin, and GE that call the upstate home. The motto for Greenville Technical College is certainly appropriate: “Keys to the Future”!

“ Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness,

Where the Tigers play, here the sons of dear old Clemson reign supreme always…”

Hold That Tiger, Eye of the Tiger… why are there orange paws everywhere?!  Clemson is a household word.  Founded in 1889, about 40 minutes southwest of Greenville, on the banks of Lake Hartwell, this historic public university is focused on science, engineering and research.  The institution’s influence is felt across the state of South Carolina and beyond with an economic impact of 1.83 billion for the state.  Currently, hosting over 22,000 undergrad and graduate students combined who attend  six different colleges, is it any wonder these Tigers have their own forest?  They also enjoy three libraries including the Special Collections Library in the Strom Thurmond Institute which houses rare books and manuscripts.

With longstanding military roots and active programs like ROTC, cadets maintain a presence in campus life.  The Tiger mascot does pushups for every point scored at the football games and so do the cadets.  Military organizations include the K-7 Scabbard and Blade and the Clemson Rangers.  Did someone mention sports, or maybe FOOTBALL?  Clemson has won four national championships: one in football two in men’s soccer and one in men’s golf.  Primary rival? USC.  The Homecoming and Tigerama festivities are something to see.

As for student media, with a staff of 95 students, The Tiger, founded in 1907, can boast being the oldest student run newspaper in South Carolina.  The student run radio station : WSBF-FM broadcasts across the upstate and online.

The Princeton Review ranked Clemson 1st for town-gown relations, 2nd for happiest students, 2nd for jock schools, 3rd for everyone plays intramural sports (including a corn hole team), 8th for students pack the stadiums, and 9th for best career services.  Basically, Clemson is a fun place!

We could not talk about Greenville’s academic highlights without including the Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities.  Their colors happen to be blue and white.  It is truly a haven and oasis for artistically gifted high school students, located just off South Main Street in downtown Greenville.  The graceful campus overlooks reedy River Falls Park and is designed with the aesthetic of a Tuscan village.  Students apply and audition to attend either a two, or three-year program depending on discipline.  Instruction at this residential high school is modeled after a master-apprentice community featuring a faculty comprised, primarily, of professional artists.  Concentrations include: Creative Writing, Drama, Dance, Music, and Visual Arts.

“Govies” as they are called, form close bonds with fellow students and are encouraged to engage with the larger community.  There are many planned excursions and field trips in addition to students general free time.  The Connecting Arts Through Service, “CATS” club, fosters a sense of social responsibility.  The curriculum is considered pre-professional training and challenges students to combine theoretical study with real world learning experiences.  There are also summer intensive programs offered for younger students in all of the schools regular areas of study.

In addition to the Governor’s School, Greenville boasts many notable K12 magnet and charter schools with specific areas of focus, and the achievements of our students are a source of great pride.  Like diamonds in various stages of polishing they are part of what makes our city sparkle.  If the shaping of a young mind or two is what brings you to Greenville, The Swamp Rabbit Inn and Properties are a calm spot in the swirl of getting your students sorted and keeping them supported.  Be true to your school and let your colors fly!
